Using Bond Energies
This page is designed to fulfil a number of purposes related to the use of bond energies to estimate reaction enthalpies. As with the other pages, it can generate problems for you to solve. Alternatively, you can use it to solve problems you find elsewhere. As your first step in using the page, you must select whether you want it to generate problems for you, by clicking on the checkbox below. Once you had made that decision, clicking on "Start" begins execution. If you have asked for a problem, one will appear in the top frame. In addition, regardless of whether you have asked for a problem, the frame on the right will contain bond data for your use. In using the data to solve the problem, use the following procedure:
- Identify all bonds broken or formed and click on the appropriate checkbox.
- In the cell following the check boxes, enter the number of bonds broken or formed. If only one bond was affected, you do not need to enter a number.
- When all of the data is entered, you can check it by clicking on the "Check Input" button. A small window will appear with your data in it. This is merely for you to check. To close the small window, click on OK
- When you are satisfied with your input, press the "Submit" button on the window with the bonds listed. The result of your data input will appear in the main window. If you are doing a problem the page produced, you will also get the usual scoring on the main window.
